New development on Beaumont convention center project
The Beaumont City Council is considering a proposal to increase the hotel occupancy tax from 15% to 17% to fund a project for the downtown Beaumont Convention Center. The council approved an amendment to specify the tax increase would support this particular venue, addressing concerns about the project's broad language.
The proposed 2% tax hike would primarily affect visitors rather than residents, as it targets hotel stays. The plan will be sent to the Comptroller for review, and if approved by the state, the council will decide whether to place the measure on the November ballot.
Mayor Becky Ames said the tax is expected to generate approximately $1 million annually. "The market feasibility study that we received from HSV, it shows that we would be able to cash flow this property so that there would need to be a general obligation bond, which does increase people's property tax," she said.
Next week, the council will finalize the language for the November election ballot, including the items to be voted on.
