How Psychedelics And Meditation Affect The Brain
Currently, psychedelics are getting renewed interest from the medical community. From anxiety and depression to addiction and even overcoming fear of death, research is showing psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has a lot to offer. And science is showing us that the same part of the brain that is suppressed with psychedelics—the default mode network— is also suppressed in very experienced meditators. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman explores this topic in his conversations with Michael Pollan, Anthony Bossis and Daniel Goleman.
Michael Pollan is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Cooked, Food Rules, In Defense of Food, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, The Botany of Desire, and his latest book How to Change Your Mind, which is all about the new science of psychedelics. A longtime contributor to the New York Times Magazine, he also teaches writing at Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley where he is the John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Science Journalism. In 2010, Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world.
Anthony P. Bossis, Ph.D. conducts FDA-approved clinical trials in the reemerging field of psychedelic research. He is a clinical psychologist and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine investigating the effects of psilocybin, a naturally occurring compound found in specific species of mushrooms. Dr. Bossis was director of palliative care research, co-principal investigator, co-author, and session guide on the 2016 landmark study showing a significant reduction in emotional distress along with enhanced existential wellbeing from a single psilocybin-generated mystical experience in persons with cancer.
Dr. Bossis is a supervisor of psychotherapy at Bellevue Hospital and co-founder and former co-director of the Bellevue Hospital Palliative Care Service and maintains a private psychotherapy practice in NYC.
Daniel Goleman is best known for his worldwide bestseller Emotional Intelligence and most recently co-authored the book Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain and Body. Goleman has been ranked among the 25 most influential business leaders by several business publications including TIME and The Wall Street Journal. Apart from his writing on emotional intelligence, Goleman has written books on topics including self-deception, creativity, transparency, meditation, social and emotional learning, eco-literacy, and the ecological crisis.

Psilocybin mushrooms saved my life
Through mushroom ceremonies I realized how deeply connected we are to everything and this helps transform the ego. It’s about reopening our connection to the universe, the connection has always been there we just need to reactivate it. The monks through their meditation practices have found a similar path. Once we understand the relationship between the ego and the universe we can then establish a baseline for meditation. It is our awareness of ego and understanding how the stories we submit to memory about our experiences that diminishes its negative influence over us. The stories we submit into our memories are often a result of previous memories which are heavily influenced by the ego. The stories are based from a disconnected view of the world if they’re heavily ego-based. If by whatever means say being mushrooms or meditation we can become connected to the universe and more disconnected from ego then the newly stored memories become less egocentric. The more of these less egocentric memories we store the less our life becomes about ego and the more aware we become about how we view our experiences.
I found this interview really interesting very good information! Knowledge
Psychadelics leave seem alterations to brain
I lost all that thanks to psych drugs
with jungian psychology perspective
i,ve been experiencing like emotional bomb while meditating, and something in the centre of my chest pushed by that emotion
Put BLOTTER as your PROFILE PIC! Please share my site
I m going through this experience ..things which can be achieved through psychedelics fast and temporary can be achieved with meditation solely a little slowly and permanently..but the best combination is both to realize this experience and take the meditation path in the end and keeps..meanwhile u experience this speech and make ur own reality ..just my personal opinion
This is excellent! Thank u for sharing.
LSD is toxic garbage!
I love my namaaz (salaat)
Mr. Goldman at the end States that "once the drugs wear off, the ego returns". We ARE permanently neurophysiologically alter by a psychedelic experience! He makes it seems like the experience happens and then we're right back to our old self…WRONG! Perfect world is that through a transformative psychedelic experience we can then open our minds to novel ways of being and are more likely to adopt a meditative practice. If we were to ask all the people in The West to find a cave and meditate for 12 years we'll get about nowhere!!! Psychedelics are a gateway drug…gateway to connection to one another and all else!
