What happens when the mind confronts existence while under the influence of LSD? This story recounts a jarring experience that transformed a simple bad trip into a philosophical deep dive. By wrestling with the terrifying sensation of being trapped within one’s own consciousness, the speaker unexpectedly stumbled upon Socrates’ ancient argument from affinity. It’s a fascinating look at the distinction between the decaying physical body and the enduring, invisible nature of consciousness, prompting a reevaluation of what truly survives when the ride finally comes to an end.

A Brief On Toe: logical knowing
Am I my big toe
Are you my little toe
Is my big toe me
Is my little toe you
The thing I call me
When it is aware
Can pay attention
To one thing here
Can have no care
Of another thing there
But so too as unaware
Of things paid inattention to
Simultaneously as being aware
Of The I that I am
Can also be fully aware
And stare right through
What it wants to pay attention to
Where are my glasses
It says to other things
Which laugh at you
As being unaware
And stating
You’re wearing them now
You blithering you
Not to mention
the inattention
Whilst driving
asleep while awake
Who’s driving you then
When you’re unaware
while awake
This thing you call you
Operates a thing,
So it would seem,
Which operates the thing
You call you
Don’t get me going
About pleasure and pain
Suffering is not in your toe
It’s only in that thing
you call you
You are slave to a master
Who partners an emissary
Of which you
Are both and neither
Liquid sound
Two hemispheres
Two lobes apiece
Split down the middle
Patterns which appear
Similar to a walnut
Only now as a gelatinous
Pattern of sound
One asks
How is a pattern
The same for two
Different kinds of things
Is the pattern me
Is the pattern you
Is the pattern the walnut
Is the pattern the brain
If the pattern of a walnut
Is identical with the pattern
Of a brain
Then what can be
The being of me
Versus the being
Of the fruit of a tree
If I am not my toe
Am I my brain
If I am my toe
Am I not my brain
What drives the train
What stops and starts this ride
Am I a train conductor
Watching the train move
Or is the train all there is
And the I that I am
A mute passenger
The kind of thing
I am is like you
Whether you float down
The river Thames or the river Styx
God is spirit
There is the literal, the letter of the law
There is the spirit of the law
Are you a literalist or a spiritualist
God is love
God is spirit
Get in the team spirit
God is the spirit of love
God is truth
God is the spirit of truth
If you don’t follow the truth you reap what you sow
The vengeance of the Lord is the truth
The vengeance of the truth
is not following the truth
will destroy you
The vengeance of truth is not vindictive but reality
Sin is missing the mark
The mark is truth
And nothing but the truth
So help you God
The language maps to a truth whether you believe it or not
And if it maps to a truth
And truth is not the map
The the truth is the reality
The mapping is true to
Who am I
Who are you
What are we
When we don’t know
In that I am
I am aware
I know only
What I know
Whether true
Or no
I like mcGilchrist's notion that the brain is to consciousness as a riverbank is to a river.
I've taken LSD a few times. Weirdly, it doesn't make me hallucinate. Even on 300 micrograms, which is enough to cause complete disassociation with reality. I get a sense of clarity and calm. It increases my athletic endurance ten fold. Increase my reaction times and makes my thoughts feel more sharp and concise. I become highly extraverted and communicative. My focus shifts to other people, and the ideas they want to express and cultivating the connected that brings as opposed to my normal mode of explaining my ideas and expecting people to understand them. I would highly recommend that other people have the same experience. Though, I doubt that LSD would provide the same experiences I have had. I hear other people explain their experiences and it is nothing like what I experience.
I've done some research and it turns out that there is evidence to suggest the hallucinatory effect of LSD is caused by constriction of blood vessels. The LS part of LSD is lysergic acid, commonly known as ergotamine. It is a vasoconstrictor used as medicine to treat migraines and to stop bleeding. LSD is about 100x more potent then LS, but lysergic acid has the same entheogenic effects as LSD.
In a recent study they showed the hallucinations of LSD can be stopped by administering large amount of vasodilators such a vitamin B. While the B vitamins stop the hallucinations, the LSD still had a mental stimulant effect. There is more research being done now on using vasodilators as general anti psychotics.
If consciousness doesn't decay, how do you explain Alzheimer's, and dementia? Consciousness is tied to your brain. Without your brain, there is no consciousness.
There is also no such thing as a bad trip or a good trip. You are just tripping.
