Transdisciplinarity in Psychedelic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison: A State of the Field Review
Liz Birkhauser , Amanda Pratt , Cody Wenthur

Psychedelic studies, by their very nature, are multifaceted and transdisciplinary, spanning time and space. As issues surrounding planetary and human health mount, psychedelics have attracted interest and excitement as a potentially hopeful promise for modernity’s ills. This presentation aims to bring awareness to the current state of research, education, resources, and activism related to psychedelic studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. UW has been at the forefront of psychedelic research for nearly the past decade, holding some of the first psilocybin pharmacokinetic clinical trials. From current groundbreaking psychedelic research and the establishment of the UW Transdisciplinary Center for Research in Psychoactive Substances to developing the first-of-its-kind Master of Science in Psychoactive Pharmaceutical Investigation program in the School of Pharmacy- we are working to further the understanding of psychedelics not only in the scientific, therapeutic and clinical aspects but also across sociocultural, legal, ecological and historical realms. The UW is home to psychedelic space-shaping resources which includes a diverse group of transdisciplinary researchers advancing scholarship across campus. UW also collaborates with local non-profits Portia Sophia, which works to protect the psychedelic space from overly-broad patents and the Usona Institute, which is dedicated to the research of consciousness-expanding therapies. Our presentation will review the current state of the UW’s scholarly psychedelic activities, with the intention to inform, inspire, and facilitate future transdisciplinary collaborations and connections.
