Global sales of antidepressant drugs are expected to exceed $20 billion by 2030. Now, some investors are betting that psychedelic therapies can grab a share of that enormous market.

Due to their mind-bending qualities, substances like psilocybin, ketamine, LSD and MDMA remain illegal in most of the world.

That may help explain why markets are showing strong doubts about the industry. A CNBC examination of seven psychedelic stocks that trade in the United States found that most of them are close to their 52-week lows as of mid-February, with some more than 80% lower than their 52-week highs.

But venture firms that invest in the new industry are standing by the drugs.

“Psychedelic healthcare is a very exciting area because it’s really this apex of drugs, clinics and experimental treatments,” said Clara Burtenshaw, a partner at Neo Kuma Ventures, the largest European venture capital fund that invests in psychedelic companies such as Atai Life Sciences and Compass Pathways.

As interest from the medical community and investors grows, what’s next for the psychedelic therapy market? Watch the video above to find out.

We know the mayans and aztecs took psychadelics. They performed human sacrifice. We must be careful using this as a substitute for religion in psycology.

@ericbond5276 says:

Psychedelic public companies should merge rather then compete with one another. I own shares of 4 companies. Prior to Trump getting into office with Jeff Sessions, I did well with cannabis companies, after the election, those stocks went down drastically. I think there is a better opportunity with the psychedelics.

Shout out the lawyer who is protecting the traditional uses of these medicines

Incredibly well produced piece. I would like to add to the chorus of others by saying that psikocybin saved my life. One dose helped me turn my life around and end 5 years of poly drug abuse. 14 years later, I'm absolutely thriving with a family of my own.

@kyled1201 says:

BWVI (Psycheceutical Bioscience) is the best pychedelic stock imo

Unfortunately this won’t help with anything in the ongoing late stage capitalism, collapse and eventual mass poverty.

@josenino7140 says:

maybe they can also use cordyceps in treating mental health issues

@projectbirdfeederman5491 says:

Gove just do whatever they want… look at the "v" thing… if they want to give everyone shrooms they'd get the tax payers to fund it. If shrooms help you can be sure we won't be allowed them lol

@johntnguyen9917 says:

Psilocybin mushrooms saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety and illicit pill addiction. Imagine carrying heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not in a couple years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.

@alberteinstein1452 says:

Big pharma will not allow psychedelic medicine unfortunately via government lobbying to keep it illegal and very difficult for the medical community to study and administer. The reason? You said it yourself, $30bil made on antidepressants by 2023. They love money why rock the boat and make things better in their mind?

@Jerryberger9235 says:

It is absolutely beautiful how people talk so many things about psychedelic and magic mushrooms too..
Everyone focused on how magic mushrooms can change and also save lives.. I haven't try it but I deep down I really what to try it.. just looking for a reliable source..

@Stephanie56739 says:

There's a lot of potential in psychedelics, I can't wait to try any of them mushrooms specifically but it's just so hard to find a reliable source over here, l'll be glad if anyone can be of help

@yigoyoyo23 says:

Great to see that this is getting some attention, it is the future

@MMMMatt says:
